What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling — also known as collagen induction therapy — is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a device with fine, sterile needles to create thousands of microscopic channels in the skin. These controlled micro-injuries trigger the skin's natural healing cascade, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin.

At IV-LYTES, we use the SkinPen — the only FDA-cleared microneedling device in the United States. This matters: the FDA clearance means efficacy and safety have been clinically demonstrated through rigorous testing.

The Three Phases of Healing

Understanding why microneedling works requires understanding how skin heals:

Phase 1: Inflammation (Days 1–2)

The micro-injuries signal your immune system to deploy. Blood flow increases to the treatment area, and growth factors flood in. This is the initiation phase — the wound healing cascade begins.

Phase 2: Proliferation (Days 3–14)

Fibroblasts are activated and begin synthesizing new collagen and elastin. This is where the magic happens — your skin is essentially rebuilding itself with fresh, healthy tissue.

Phase 3: Remodeling (Weeks 3 to 6 months)

The new collagen matures and reorganizes. This phase can continue for up to 6 months after treatment, which is why results continue to improve long after your session.

What Conditions Does Microneedling Treat?

Acne Scars

Acne scars are caused by damaged collagen in the dermis. By stimulating new collagen production in the scarred areas, microneedling physically restructures the scar tissue — reducing pitting, rolling scars, and boxcar scars.

Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Aging skin loses collagen at approximately 1% per year after age 20. Microneedling reverses this by stimulating fresh collagen production, plumping the skin and reducing the appearance of fine lines.

Hyperpigmentation and Sun Damage

The controlled injury accelerates cellular turnover, helping to break up and eliminate melanin deposits responsible for dark spots and uneven skin tone.

Enlarged Pores

As new collagen forms around pores, they appear smaller and more refined.

Stretch Marks

The same collagen-remodeling mechanism that improves acne scars also reduces the appearance of stretch marks over a series of treatments.

What to Expect: Before, During, and After

Before: Avoid sun exposure, retinoids, and blood thinners for one week prior. Arrive with clean skin.

During: A topical numbing cream is applied 30 minutes before treatment. The SkinPen glides across the skin systematically, creating the micro-channels. Treatment takes 15–30 minutes. You will feel mild pressure and warmth — discomfort is minimal.

After: Skin will appear pink to red for 24–48 hours, similar to a mild sunburn. This resolves within 2–4 days. Avoid sun exposure and harsh skincare products for 72 hours post-treatment.

How Many Sessions Do I Need?

For most patients, 3 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart produces optimal results. Improvements in fine lines are typically visible after the first session. Acne scar improvement becomes more dramatic after the second and third sessions, as collagen continues to remodel for up to 6 months.

Maintenance treatments every 6–12 months help sustain results.

Who Is Not a Good Candidate?

Microneedling is not recommended for:

  • Active skin infections, acne flares, or open wounds
  • Active skin cancer in the treatment area
  • Pregnancy
  • Current use of isotretinoin (Accutane) or within 6 months of use
  • Bleeding disorders
