The Questions Nobody Asks Out Loud

When patients inquire about colonic hydrotherapy, there's usually a list of questions they're too embarrassed to voice. I'm going to answer every single one of them here, because the reality of what colonics involves is far less uncomfortable than most people's imaginations.

"Does it hurt?"

No. Our open-system technology uses gentle, body-temperature purified water. The sensation is fullness — similar to needing to use the restroom. Some patients experience mild cramping during the release phase, but most describe the overall experience as uncomfortable for a moment and then immediately relieving.

"Is it embarrassing?"

This is the big one. With our open-system technology, you insert the slender rectal tube yourself, in complete privacy. Once positioned, you're covered with a drape and the treatment runs automatically. There is no therapist in the room during your session. The waste exits through a closed tube system — you don't see or smell it. When you're done, you use the restroom privately for about 10 minutes before getting dressed.

"What happens if I have an accident?"

You won't. The open-system technology means waste drains continuously through a closed tube throughout the session. The system is designed so there's no opportunity for an accident.

"What does it smell like?"

The system is fully closed and odor-controlled. You will not smell anything during your session.

"Can I go to work afterward?"

Yes. Most patients return to normal activities immediately. Many come during their lunch hour. Wear comfortable clothes that are easy to change out of.

"Will it be uncomfortable in there?"

The treatment room is a private, dignified space — not a clinical hospital environment. Think spa, not procedure room.

"How much waste actually comes out?"

This varies significantly between patients. The colon can retain 3–5 pounds of waste under normal circumstances and up to 15 pounds in cases of severe constipation or slow transit. Most patients are surprised by the amount that comes out.

"Will I lose weight from it?"

You'll likely see the scale drop 1–3 pounds immediately. This isn't fat loss — it's the removal of accumulated waste from the colon. Some patients, particularly those with constipation, see more significant changes. The long-term weight management benefit comes from improved colon function and metabolism.

"Is it safe?"

Yes, when performed with modern equipment and proper protocols. At IV-LYTES, we use medical-grade equipment, maintain strict hygiene standards, and have physician oversight for all treatments. Colonics are not recommended for patients with certain conditions — we review your health history before every session.

"How should I prepare?"

Eat lightly the day before. Avoid heavy meats, dairy, and processed foods. Drink plenty of water. Arrive at your appointment well-hydrated. That's it.

The first session is often the most anxiety-inducing — and usually the most relieving. Patients routinely tell us they wish they'd come years earlier.
